Meet your host Gemma Delaney was born in Adamstown, a small village in rural Co.Wexford, Ireland. The youngest of six children, she spent hours listening to the radio and reading crime books which resulted in a love of radio and a fascination with true crime at a young age. At 30, she returned to college as a mature student to fulfil her dream of becoming a radio presenter.
She founded What’s Up Doc: The Documentary Review Podcast in 2019 for a college assignment while studying for her BA in TV and Media Production. While brainstorming for the podcast’s subject, a classmate suggested she review documentaries, as I had become a running joke that she had seen them all.
The pilot episode of What’s Up Doc: Leaving Neverland launched on April 22 2019. It soon caught the attention of the podcasting industry, and as a result, the first season was nominated for two People’s Choice Podcast Awards in the Best TV and Film Podcast and People’s Choice categories.
Ahead of the launch of season three, What’s Up Doc was rebranded as What’s Up Doc: The True Crime Documentary Podcast, due to the fact that every documentary reviewed up to that point had been true crime. Gemma’s fascination with true crime had shaped the genre of her podcast without her even realising!
Episode one of season three, American Murder: The Family Next Door, debuted at number one in the Irish Apple Podcast Charts and the top ten in 19 separate countries. Because of this, Gemma was asked to make guest appearances on other podcasts. Such was its success that she was allowed to produce it as her final year project, which led to her graduating with a 1:1 BA in TV and Media Production. “As a child in school I was always told I talked too much and my poor mother was concerned with what she called my ‘morbid fascination’ with true crime. I guess 30 years ago that didn’t exactly add up to a future career!” Gemma lives in Wexford with her daughter and partner and is currently studying for her MA in Broadcast Production.
